Getting Your Living Room Ready for the Holidays

The living room is a special place, especially during the holidays. It is the place where children open presents from Santa Claus, where couples cuddle on the couch in front of the fire while watching ‘White Christmas’,  and where families gather around the piano to sing holiday carols. The living room should be inviting and calming, a place where out- of- towners can kick their shoes off and feel at home. Even the smallest updates can make a big difference.  It doesn’t matter if you want to do something extravagant or something simple, read forth, there is something for everyone! :smileyvery-happy:

Let’s start simple. Painting the walls and adding some wall hangings are a great way to change the look of a room.  I have great interest in what color represents and how certain colors make us feel. Blue is a calming color, which would be ideal for a living room. Brown is another good color because it represents wholesomeness and earthiness. These colors together have great power together as well, and are quite popular in Fall and Winter décor.

Behr ColorSmart is a wonderful tool to help you pick the perfect color for your living room. You can upload an actual picture or use a picture they have on their site and virtually paint it.

If you don’t want to paint the whole room, even painting an accent wall would change the look. Martha Stewart Specialty paints are perfect for painting an accent wall. With Martha Stewart’s Faux Finishing Glaze you can achieve a textured fabric look, such as raw silk, or a sponge effect. With the Precious Metals finish you can have metallic stripes. Isn’t that nifty?

Painting your front door can really improve your curb appeal and go well with your newly painted walls. Glidden Trim and Door paint is perfect for just that. It is a no drip, oil- based, gel paint. It leaves absolutely no brush strokes with an extra high gloss finish.  Other updates you could do to your door include, getting a new knob, knocker and kick plate.

Have you often dreamt about crown moulding? Did you know that it is pretty easy to do yourself? For around $200 you can have brand new moulding. Crown moulding adds value and beauty to your home. From  basic crown moulding  to more elaborate moulding, the possibilities are endless. Click the picture below for crown moulding buying and how to guides.

Now, let’s discuss those lights. There are quite a few buying guides discussing different types of overhead lighting. Click the picture below to figure out which kind of overhead lighting will work the best for you.

Hampton Bay lighting has new fixtures in their collection. New finishes include oil- rubbed bronze and polished nickel. Personally, I’m a fan of oil- rubbed bronze.

Home Decorators Collection also has a huge selection of pendent lights that range from $39.99 to $99.00.

Let’s talk window treatments. Home Decorators also has faux and real wood blinds available. Real wood blinds add warmth and comfort to a room. They block out light and give you privacy. Real wood blinds also give a naturally distinctive look. Faux wood blinds also offer privacy and block out light, and they are more durable, easier to clean and a little less expensive.
