Granite counter top and soft water

My roommate seems extremely worried about water stains on the new granite counter tops. But our water here is quite soft and high quality. Is this water likely to stain the counter top?

Hello Tim454 and welcome to the Community.

Granite needs to be sealed when first installed and periodically annually or semi-annually because it is a hard but porous surface.  Here is a link to granite counter top sealers and cleaners.

Water may penetrate and leave a dark mark but will usually disappear as the moisture evaporates.  If you have hard water containing minerals, residual minerals may adhere to the counter as the moisture evaporates.  These minerals can be removed but resealing those areas would be necessary.

Acidic liquids like wine, orange or lemon juice, even soda and household soap can break down the sealant and stain the surface, so clean these with a mild soap and water immediately.

That being said, best practice is to remove moisture as soon as possible.

Thank you for your inquiry.
