Hampton Bay Ceiling Fan: How to separate light and fan functions?

Hello! I recently installed the Hampton Bay Roanoke ceiling fan, however the light and fan functions operate on the same switch. Can someone advice on how to get each function to work on separate switches? Thank you! Meg

Hi megtrauth,

I'm assuming your Roanoke fan is the indoor-outdoor version shown below correct?

Hampton Bay Roanoke 48 in. Iron Indoor/Outdoor Ceiling Fan

If that is the case, and you want separate switches, you have 2 options to have independent controls of the fan and light kit.

The first is to simply install a remote control to the ceiling fan. This option requires some wiring in the junction box where the wires meet the fan in the ceiling, but its less wiring than the 2nd option.

Any remote control we sell at The Home Depot in the store or online will work for the fan. Once you wire and install the receiver correctly, then you can get separate control for both fan and lights at the simple touch of a button.

The 2nd option can be done, but it involves more wiring. That would require you to run an additional wire(s) through the ceiling and down the wall and add another switch. It can be done, but this may require a lot of cutting and if you aren't familiar with wiring through walls...it could be daunting.

In either option, if you are stuck or have additional questions, you can contact a local licensed electrician in your area.

Please let us know which option you decide, and we can go over more information. In either case, you can get separate controls for your fan and light kit.
