How do I Paint galvanized metal?

I need to paint a galvanized cover that conceals some ac lines. Do I need to prime it first? Can I use my outdoor trim paint?

A 100% acrylic based "paint and primer" paint, such as any of the Behr Exterior Paints, can be applied directly to the galvanize surface. If it is new galvanized, it is a good idea to wipe down the surface first with lacquer thinner to remove any oils left from the manufacturing process.

Hello Firegirl2169.

Since you want to use your existing outdoor trim paint for the final look, I would suggest you prime the cover before you paint.  I have had good luck with Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 on galvanized metal.  Clean the cover first.  If it's dirty then use soapy water to clean it.  Finish cleaning by wiping it down with a white vinegar on a cloth.  As ordjen said, lacquer thinner would remove any oils on new metal. Let it dry and then prime.  Your trim paint with then stick well to the primer.
