Hi ronnieg,

Pavers can be applied to a smooth concrete patio. If you intend to stay within the boundaries of the existing patio, there will be no need to dig out any soil. If you want to expand your patio, dig out the area of soil and replace it with a layer of Paver Base and tamp it to the concrete level. This will establish a strong, consistent base for the pavers.

A thin layer of leveling sand will make installation easier. You will need to sweep in some of the leveling sand in between the paver stones to lock them into place.

You will need to consider the additional height of the stones on top of the existing patio when you are finished. A border will be necessary if the stones will be higher than the surrounding soil.

Here's another post that might give you additional ideas about your project:

There are some great pictures in that post that show more edge border options, too.

Keep us posted, I'd love to see before and after pictures.
