How do I paint a formica cabinet?

I have a black formica TV stand but I'm tired of looking at it.  How can I paint it?  Will enamel based or Rustoleum work?

DebbiDoo,

Perhaps the easiest way to paint the laminate and get a hard, durable, brushfree finish, is by use of spray cans.
The RustOleum Painters Touch or Univesal lines are both self-priming and will adhere directly to laminate.

As with any paint project, the surface should be clean of dirt and free of oils from hands. A scuff sanding with 220 paper will break down the glossy surface and help assure adhesion.

Should you want to paint this piece with a brush  and   trim roller, you will want to prime it first. All three types of primers will work on laminate:  shellac based, water based or oil based. In the Zinsser line, these are BIN, Zinsser 123 or CoverStain respectively. You will then want to finish coat with either acrylic or oil paint, preferable in at least a satin or semi-gloss sheen. Under an oil paint, BIN or CoverStain would be the preferable primers.

Hope this has helped.
