How do I replace rusty connections on flex pipes into a hot water heater?

How do I replace rusty connections on flex pipes into a hot water heater?  I have tried tightening the bolts, but they start leaking again after a couple of days.  They are very rusty.  The hot water heater works great so I don't want to have to replace it.

Hi mardykuntzelman,

Those rusty connections should be replaced before one springs a major leak.

Turn off the water supply to the water heater, open the closest hot water faucet and let the system pressure escape.

Next remove the flex lines and discard them. The water tank has two nipples on the top, one for hot one for cold.

Carefully remove the nipples and replace both with new nipples designed for water heaters. Use Teflon tape or pipe joint compound on  the connections.

Finally install new flex lines, close the faucet, turn on the water to the water heater and test for leaks.

Hi Mike

You make it sound very simple.  I would rather do it myself than hire a plumber.  I really appreciate your advise.  I will let you know how it goes!  First thing though is to go to Home Depot and buy the parts!

Thanks so much.

Mardy
