It varies depending on the style of rack you want to use but generally speaking you want to secure it to the wood studs behind the drywall.  Could you post a picture of your rack so we could offer more specific advice?

Excellent Question jodphe!

If your wall is sheetrock, then studs (framing boards behind the sheetrock) should be located approximately every 16 or so inches apart.

Use a stud finder ... your Hardware Associate can show you an inexpensive one for this project.

This tool will locate both leading and trailing edges of the stud.

Mark both edges of the stud with a pencil ... at the height you wish to hang your coat rack.

Position the rack or the rack hangers and screw through the sheetrock into the stud.

A drill motor with a screw bit will make easy work of this task.

Suspend the rack and put into everyday use.

IF THE RACK DOESN'T LINE UP:

If the anchor points on your rack do not line up with the studs, you may have to use hangers designed for the load.

Like most of the other tools required for this project, hangers can be found in Hardware.

Bring your rack to The Store to ensure you purchase supplies that match your project.

OTHER MATERIALS:

Should your wall be made of other material, like cement, consult with your Hardware Associate for the correct anchors.

Masonry anchors are designed for concrete walls ... etc.
