How do you meaure for exterior shutters that are for decorative purposes only?

Snodgrass,

 

In an effort to make the faux shutters appear as if they were real operating shutters, the height of the shutters is measured from the top of the sill to the bottom edge of the top brick molding, as if they could fold into the window opening. Were they real shutters, a shutter would be half the width of the distance between the verticle brick moldings. In reality, they don't normally come in these widths, so you choose the width that looks best with your window. You might want to cut a mock-up out of cardboard to preview how they might look.
