Great article Dave,

Critter Ridder is another excellent repellant.

I use it to keep squirrels from climbing on siding and to keep rabbits from eating the tips off Liriope.

Howdy all,

Well, after getting a bunch of requests I decided to share more ideas on how to keep unwanted animals out of your yard.  So without further delay, let’s get started:

There are a number of granule and liquid animal repellents that use science to keep the animals at bay. They even feature ones that work for reptiles and larger animals as well. There are also perimeter sprays that keep bugs like mosquitos, moths, and other pests away.

Planting prickly plants work to deter animals from hanging around. Plants like Cactus, Phoenix Roebelenii (pygmy date palm), and Bougainvillea are all tried and true plants that get results.

Electronic pest deterrents have come a long way and there are units geared towards insects, gophers, moles, and other varmints. Don’t forget the ever popular “bug zappers” that

Traps are fast becoming a humanely way of dealing with unwanted guest’s. Take care when releasing them back into the wild because they can be wild animals that could attack you instead of thank you.

The latest and could be greatest is the electronic spray away that uses water instead of chemicals to startle and keep unwanted animals away from your property 24 hours a day. There is even solar version with water reservoirs’ to store the water so you don’t need a hose nearby.

There are a number of bird deterrents like Owls and Falcons. Also using sparkly things like CD blanks or other shine surface things annoys birds from coming to your yard. I’ve used a tennis ball with broken mirror pieces glued to it to make a “disco ball” that had birds dancing somewhere else.

Of course you could always do what my Dad does and have a pack of 6 or 7 dogs that patrol rain or shine.

Happy Petting,

Coach Dave
