How to Stain Ugly grout

We put glazed Brazilian tile down on the bottom floor of our house 2 years ago.  All products came from HD.  the grout color we picked was an exact match to the tile's darkest hue.  But when the grout dried, some places are dark grey, some are light grey, some are dirty brown.  Nothing came out like the color swatch.  We sealed the tile but after two years of scrubbing, bleaching, steaming, etc, the sealer is probably gone. Now I would like to stain the grout to even out the color and make it closer to the color of the tile.  What is the best method and products for this? Thanks in advance.

Acids don't remove sealers, wether oil, petroleum, fluoropolymer or waterbased. Actually they compound them. Use this product as I have for 24 years to remove old sealers.use befor preperation. Also when working with any pre treat acidic cleaner you should always use neutralize with water.

Usually an acidic type cleaner is one of those "last resort" type products, but this is the preparation step recommended specifically by the manufacturer, so I definitely won't argue with them = )

You're actually looking at more of a 2-day project, tops. It's recommended that you give the Sulfamic Acid Cleaner about 24 hours to work it's magic and dry out, but you should see noticeable results in about 6 hours. The Grout Renew is actually a colorant & sealant-in-one, so that takes an entire step out of the process for you. It will be ready for light traffic in 4-6 hours, but I would let it set for 24 until you resume with normal traffic on top of it.

After it's down, just be sure not to use any solvent based cleaners, as this will weaken the sealer coat over time. Custom Building Products Grout and Tile Cleaner is a great product to start using for your everyday tile cleaning and will ensure that your seal coat is properly maintained over time.

Honestly, there are a number of different factors that can contribute to grout coming out different colors. It could be something as simple as two different bags being used that are mixed from different lots, an excess build up of mortar underneath certain sections, improper dry-time on the mortar/mastic, or even the humidity in the room.

Sometimes things like that are out of our control, but that's why we're here, to help fix them up = )

Let me know how this turns out for you or if you have any other questions on it!~

Thanks for the tips, Ask_MR_Jay.

I didn't know about cleaning with acid first, I will definitely do that.  I was thinking I could scrub with an oxygen bleach or something before staining.  It sounds like this will be about a 3 day job total.  1 for cleaning, 1 for staining,  1 for drying.  Is sealing recommended with this product?

I am not sure what happened to the grout but I have read that this has happened to foks before.  It seems like something goes wrong with the mixing - like maybe it was not mixed thoroughly enough and a mottled effect happened.  There was only 1 guy mixing grout and it was done on one day.

Hey there kjar,

Sorry to hear about the troubles with your grout color; we can definitely come up with a fix for it though. It sounds a bit strange that the grout color varied that much during your tile set though. Did you by chance fill the areas at different times or with different people? A variance in technique or set time could be to blame for the color differences in your floor.

The solution for re-staining your old grout is a simple one, but you'll want to take caution before trying it depending on what type of tile that you have. Since you noted that it was glazed, you should be just fine. But if your tile is porous like a travertine, then this solution may run the risk of dying your actual tile itself if not properly sealed beforehand. So just be sure to check first = )

The easiest way to renew your grout, would be to apply a product called Grout Renew. Imagine a stain like you would use on wood, but for tile grout-- and it works pretty similarly too! You need to clean the joints first however, so that your new color can properlyPolyblend Grout Renew.jpg sink into the grout. To do this you'll clean using a Sulfamic Acid Cleaner, which will help remove any unwanted sealers or stains in the grout. Caution: The Acid cleaner is just that, a corrosive material. Be sure to handle it only with proper safety protection including gloves and eye protection, be sure to read the directions fully. After applying this, let the grout dry out overnight.

You can then apply your Grout Renew on your joints the next day. If you're doing a large job that requires more than one bottle, (80 sq.ft) then you will want to mix all your bottles into a separate container before applying. Best thing I've found to apply with was a soft-bristle toothbrush. Apply a small amount to the center of the joint and work it into the rest of the joint. Be sure not to let any dry on the actual tile, as it could stain it. So be sure to wipe up any mistakes you make as you go = ) It will be ready for light traffic in about 4 hours, but I would let it sit overnight before any heavy traffic if possible.

We carry Grout Renew in-stock for only a select number of colors. However you can order custom colors with us in any of the 48 Polyblend shades.

Using a method like that will help you get your grout color back to a uniform look (or in this case finally to a uniform look.) It's a great time saver, because the other alternative would be removing the old grout and replacing it completely. A very do-able job, but one that's rather left for a "last resort" shall we say.

Hopefully this gets you on your way to a batter looking room and puts that finishing touch on this job once and for all! = ) Let us know how it turns out, or if you have any other questions on it. Best of luck!~
