How to install kitchen cabinets

What is the best way to secure cabinets, both base and wall.  Screws through the back and sides, shimmed ,Should they get screwed together also, to the adjacent cabinets?

Yes, they get screwed together.   Depending on the style of cabinet, you can remove a hinge and screw behind the hinge to hide the screw.

Take the time to lay out your studs and carefully transfer those measurements to the inside of the cabinets.  You can drill a series of small holes behind the cabinets to precisely locate the studs.

Use cabinet screws, with large "washer" heads, to secure the cabinets to the wall.  Don't use drywall screws.  If you don't want to see the screws there are even little covers for the screw heads available from some manufacturers.
