How to install wainscoting using moulding frames not panels?

I don't want to use bead and board for wainscoting but instead would like to create a free style rectangular design using only moulding frames. Can chair rail moulding be used to accomplish this? If so, do I have to nail the frame into studs or can it be nailed securely into the drywall only?

I'm not sure what you're asking.  If you want to nail moulding (any kind of moulding) to the wall, it's best if you hit the studs.  Nailing into the drywall along won't be enough, you'll need to use a little construction adhesive.  Some of the high initial stick stuff may be enough but you may need to agument it with nails.  Ideally you want to use a pneumatic nailer and shoot two nails in kind of a "criss cross" pattern about 1/2" apart.  Any moulding held in place with adhesive will not come off without damage to the wall.

Does that help?
