How to remove broken off bolts ?

I removed iron hand railings from my concrete front steps to do some painting and repairs. But three of the bolts that held the railings onto the concrete broke off. So how can I get those broken off bolts out of the concrete so I can replace my railings ?

Hi JefferyT,

The bolts most likely broke off due to corrosion, you will have to drill out the old bolts and install redhead anchors. Use a high speed drill bit (for metal) to drill out the remaining bolts, once they are out use redhead drop in anchors to replace the bolts.  These anchors have female threads, they are tapped into the hole with  a special tool or a punch. When the new bolts are inserted the anchor expands and locks itself into the hole.
Drop in Anchors
1/2 inch Stainless Steel Bolt
The anchor and bolt size will depend upon the height and weight of the railing, the hardware associates at your local Home Depot can assist you in selecting the proper size anchors and bolts.

This will make removing the railing much easier next time.
