How to remove varnish from furniture?

Hi,

I have an old dresser that I want to paint but I think need to remove the already existing varnish on it. Any advice?

mddones_12,

It is not neccessary to remove the old finish. You will merely want to make sure that the old finish is clean of any old waxes or polishes and any oils from fingers, etc.  You may wash the unit with TSP for this purpose. Next you will want to give the unit a scuff sanding with fine sandpaper (220 grit). this will help assure that your primer will get good adhesion. My preference is for an oil primer such as CoverStain or Kilz. followed by an oil enamel finish coat, although an acrylic paint can also be used.

Another option on such a dresser is the use of spray cans, if a suitable color is available . Here , you will want to use the spray primer, followed by the spray finish coat. Spray cans can give a very smooth, hard, brush free oil finish. They give a minimal paint build up and avoid the gumminess exhibited by some water based paints.

Hope this has helped.
