How to repair a cracked slab of cork… Is it possible?

Here's a question that comes to us via the Apron blog. It's about a common home improvement material... and fashion. Sort of.

Was wondering if anyone knows how to repair a cracked slab of cork… Is it possible? I have some gorgeous cork platform sandals bought in 2005 but hardly worn, yet they both have partial breakages around the area that corresponds to the ball of the foot. Is there any hope of saving them? Please help, they are so comfortable and beautiful!!

What can Caitlin do?

If the area is not too far gone and it is not an issue with holding the sandal ball in place, then there is a "cosmetic" solution for the cork surface.

Find a color that closely matches the cork in a wood filler product like Elmer's Wood Filler.

  • Fill in the pitted areas with the putty and let dry.
  • Lightly sand with a smooth finish sandpaper.
  • Seal with a cork sealer that will prolong the life and prevent any further damage.

*I found a great review online for M&B Cork Renewer Restorer for a low price.
