How to repair damaged drywall/shelf

One side of shelving unit has come out of the wall; the other side is still intact.  The drywall is damaged surrounding the loose side.  Suggestions on how to fix?

Hello hurtrebecca and welcome to the Community.

I am not sure exactly what kind of damage you have but here are 2 videos on how to repair Drywall.

Video #1  and video #2

Also here is an early post about repairing drywall.

Thank you for your inquiry.

Unfortunately, the videos don't address the real problem: The shelf was too heavy for a simple dry wall mount! Better would be to open up the wall sufficiently to put wood blocking behind where the shelf was mounted, patch the drywall, and then mount the self with screws into solid wood. In years past, good builders would put wood blocking behind the walls where such things as toilet paper dispensers and towel bars would logically be mounted.
