Hello laura-auggie1 and thank you for joining The Community!  We are glad that you are here.

Always remember that medallions are decorative elements and not meant to be load-bearing.  They are not designed to support electrical fixtures or ceiling fans.

Since you are working around the ceiling fan, I recommend that you first disconnect the power by turning off the circuit breaker or removing the fuse at fuse box. Turning the power off using the fan switch is not sufficient to prevent an electric shock.  If you will be using a ladder, place it on a level surface and be sure to have a helper spot you.

If your medallion is a two-piece unit, you simply need to lower the canopy (of the ceiling fan).  Snap the two-piece moulding together, center over the hole and secure the medallion to the ceiling per manufacturer’s instructions.  It is usually not necessary to disconnect the wiring or unbolt the fixture or fan hanger from ceiling plate, hook, or crossbar.  Re-attach the canopy of the ceiling fan and set firmly against the medallion.  Test the ceiling fan for proper operation after you reconnect the power.

If the medallion is a one-piece unit, you will need to disconnect and remove the ceiling fan before installing the medallion.  It is critical that you turn the power off to the ceiling fan before lowering the fan canopy.  You will need to disconnect the wires (remember the color match).  Completely remove the ceiling fan from the ceiling plate, hook or crossbar.  Center the medallion over the ceiling box and hold in place per manufacturer’s instructions.  Replace the complete fixture and connect the wires (take care to match colors).  Move the canopy up and hold it firmly against the medallion and secure. Test the ceiling fan for proper operation after you reconnect the power.

You can find a list of tools and materials, important safety instructions, as well as informative installation drawings in this representative installation guide.  Always follow the specific instructions for your medallion.

Best wishes on your project.
