Install toilet

My house was built in 1980. The distance from wall to bolt of my old toilet is 13 in.  Can I still intall a new toilet? Is it 12 in. in all new toilet?

Thanks!

Hi heif, I’m Ken with The Home Depot in California. Welcome to the community. Good question on installing distance for toilets.

The usual way to measure is from the center of the drain to the wall. This is called the rough out. Sometimes the bolts are not exactly in the center. They may be forward or a little behind the center of the drain.

Most of the new toilets are for 12 inch rough outs. Installing a 12 inch toilet in the place you have described is okay, at most you would have an inch from the tank to the wall.

There are still some 10 inch rough out toilets, so when you go into the store, make sure the one you chose is for a 12 inch rough out.

I have included a link to give you more information on choosing a toilet (buying guide) and how to install a toilet. Hope this helps, and again welcome to the community.

Hi hfei, you're welcome. I just wanted to correct myself it's called rough-in not rough out. Thanks again for joining the community and to let you know we are here to help you with your projects. When you have another question, please ask.
