Installing digital light timer, where do I connect red wire?

The digital timer has black, red, white and green but my box has two black, two white and ground. I was told to connect black to one black, red to one black, white to both white and green to ground. This didn't work, I was then told to not connect red at all, I question this because I thought red was needed for the timer clock to run, the other option told to me was to connect red to white. If I did this would I connect one white to white and then other white to red? I have been told so many different things I thought I would ask you as that is where I purchased the timer.

Without knowing what model timer you have, my suggestion would be:

Black - power coming to box

Red - wire going to whatever you're trying to switch (light fixture, etc.)

White - White

Green - Ground (bare or green)
