Welcome to our community Ssc252002!

Thank you for your question! You can definitely strip off the old paint and varnish the wood underneath, as long as what is underneath is solid wood. Since it is in your home, I would recommend using Citristrip stripper. This particular stripper is not as toxic as some of the other strippers, however, I would still highly recommend using chemical gloves, safety goggles and wearing a mask. Depending on how many layers of paint are on your cabinets, you may have to go over it a few times to get it all off. Once it is all off and you are down to bare wood, you can varnish the surface.

Please let us know if we can help with anything else!
