Hi dkcampbell,

Thank you for your question and welcome to our community.

Yes you can paint over the surface as long as you have prepped the surface that you are going to paint.  The better you prep, the better you cabinets will look.  Here are some simple steps to follow:

  1. Be sure to have all your protective equipment handy like: Rubber Gloves, Goggles, dust mask
  2. Clean all surfaces to be painted with TSP or similar product
  3. Rinse with clean water
  4. Let cleaned area dry
  5. Sand the area to be painted with 180-200 grit sandpaper
  6. Rinse with clean water and let dry

Once your prep has been done, you are ready to paint.  You will want to use a semi-gloss for the kitchen cabinets.  This will make them easier to clean.  If you are not sure of the color or finish that you want, paint some sample areas, let them dry and see which one you like the best.  You can pick up some sample paints at your local Home Depot Paint Department for a minimal cost.

If your cabinets have an excess of paint already on them, you may need to strip of the old paint off.  Once you start sanding you will know.  If the paint keeps peeling off while you are sanding, it means that the previous layers of paint were not applied properly and will need to be removed to prevent your new paint from peeling off.
