Kitchen Island

How do you attach the two base cabinets together.  There seems to be a space of about a 1/4 inch in the back of the island if we line up the front of the two cabinets.

tmkerns,

The faceframe of most stock cabinets protrudes about 1/8th inch beyond the sidepanel. This gives the installer a little "wiggle room" when butting up to a side wall which might be out of plumb. When "gangng" two cabinets in front with cabinet screws  run sideway through the face frame, a 1/4 inch gap results in back.  Normally this does not matter as the cabinets are fastened through the rear to the wall studs. You need to install a 1/4 inch filler strip between the cabinets in the rear to prevent them from pulling together in the rear when you screw them together. A scrap of 1/4 inch plywood or lattice will suffice. The filler strip does not show when your island is finished because a decorative matching panel is normally attached to the rear or other cabinets are placed back to back with them. Of course, if you place cabinets back to back, this to will also make them ridgid and prevent them from pulling together in the rear.

Hope this helps
