Kitchen portable cutting boards

I would like to make a cutting board about 12" x 16" using three diferent types of wood, alternating the light to a dark. What are the best kinds of wood to use? Also, what kind of finish should I use? By the way, I am a novice. I have done a few wood projects and they have turned out great, just never did a cutting board.

Hi cjl,

Most hard and medium density woods can be used to make your cutting board ... maple appears frequently and cedar planks are often used in food prep.

Since you're handy with DIY wood projects, you should have no trouble organizing, securing, shaping, and smoothing the surface.

Your most significant concern will be using a food safe finish.

Most oil-based stains contain mineral spirits and other contaminants ... not good for food prep!

Stick with mineral oil or wax specifically labeled "Food Grade."

When you're done, come back and post photos.

NOTE:
DAP All Purpose Aquarium Sealer is among the very few adhesives that is safe for food contact.
