Paint may be stripped from aluminum with the use of chemical strippers, much the same as when stripping wood.

Once stripped,, you should use one of the "self-etching" primers. Aluminum does not take paint well if it has not either been chemically etched, or abraided with fine emory paper or sand paper. Home Depot does carry spray cans of self-etching aluminum primer by RustOleum. After priming, the post can be painted with either an oil or acrylic paint. Acrylic paints  due especially well on aluminum due to its elastic nature. Aluminum can be subject to expansion and contraction with changes in temperature, as when the sun suddenly shines on it. Oil paints, by their nature, are much more ridgid and inelastic, therefore more prone to peeling if the metal is moving.

Hope this has helped.
