Long Doors measurements

I am trying to remodel my home and I have noticed that the doors measure in length to be 81In, and some are a Inch or two longer, how would I get the door to measure out to 80In for normal doors.  Thank you

Hello Courtney76,

Welcome to the community.

It would be fairly easy to change the opening height for your door since your door is taller than the standard 80” high slab. If it were the other way around than it would be a little more work.

You would just remove the old door and jamb and then close down the rough opening by attaching a furring strip to the top. You would measure the outside dimension of the frame and add ¼”-½” all the way around to figure out what size you need your rough opening to be and then close it in to that measurement. The extra ¼”-1/2” will give you room for the shims to make sure that it’s installed true and plumb.

If you are having a contractor install the door for you he should not have any trouble with completing this job. It is very common to have to modify the opening size.

Let me know if you have any other questions. I would love to help.
