Mulch goes over soaker hoses to protect them and to keep water from evaporating.

Greetings steveb65,

Growing tomatoes is so rewarding, keeping the beds weed free can be challenging!

Mulching a vegetable bed is good for retaining the moisture and keeping roots cooler along with controlling the weeds. Many applications will do the trick…grass clippings from lawn mower bag, shredded sheets of newspaper, weed block fabric, and of course straw works really well!

Check out this site from our Vegetable friends and herb and vegetable provider at Bonnie Farms for some great useful information about mulching tomatoes!

Hey steveb65 and Maureen.

I prefer Wheat straw or pine straw, as it is harder to navigate for some bugs like slugs and snails that like to eat your crops. Grass clippings are fine as long as they are not green. Green grass clippings are loaded with nitrogen and will flush out a ton of leaves, preventing flowering and create a lot of sucker pruning on plants like tomatoes.

Older brown grass clippings work well as they help keep soil temperatures up as well as attract earthworms that will fertilize the veggies organically.
