Need info making paver base in las Vegas

I'm planning on making a 16x16 patio in my yard. Just wondering if it is necessary to use the 4" layer of gravel. I've read on some forums that some places don't need the gravel layer but only the 1" sand layer. Here in Vegas I don't know what the frost line is nor do I even know what a frost line is lol. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Homenoob.

Here in Georgia we have to put down 4 inches, not only to give us a strong stable footing for the pavers but also something to channel water away from the patio when torrential rains come.

Where you may not have the red clay that we have, I'm sure that you have the rain. As long as you have a stable, rocky well drained soil then you could probably get away with less.

The professionals in your local Home Depot stores garden department will have the best idea as to what would work best, otherwise I would stay between 2 to 4 inches.
