Need to reinforce a dresser

I have a three-drawer MALM from Ikea that I would like to reinforce in order to be able to hold a 20 gallon fish tank. The tank full of water and all accessories will probably be close to 200 pounds and I just doubt the MALM can support that weight on its own. My only thought it to add a thicker, stronger piece of wood to the back but wanted to know if anyone else had an idea that would give the MALM more support for the heavy fish tank.

Hi arrobs,

I have Ikea office furniture in my home office, it is well made and I am very happy with the quality, however, a chest of drawers especially one made of particleboard is not the ideal base for a fish tank. Ikea has had issues with these chests tipping over on top of small children and the thought of placing a 200 pound fish tank on top of one gives me pause.

I would not recommend this application, simply because it could lead to a serious injury or even a child's death.
Buy a proper stand for your fish tank and enjoy the fish with peace of mind.
