Hi hollanea it sounds like you have a simple case of a slightly uneven floor. Despite feeling flat almost any floor has slight warps to it, this prevents the toilet from sitting flat against it.

The fix is also a simple one. You will need to "shim" the toilet level. Shims are small wedges used to fill voids and give the toilet an even surface.

To install the shims

  1. Turn off water to toilet and flush.
  2. Identify where the low point at the floor around the toilet is.
  3. Loosen the toilet bolts.
  4. With a level resting on the toilet seat, slide the shim(s) into place until the level reads true.
  5. Tighten down toilet bolts

Depending on just how far out of level the toilet is you may also need to use a thicker wax ring.

Be sure to let us know if this solves the problem.
