New trellis

I would like to construct a wood trellis with 4 x 4 metal tube posts over an existing wood deck.  Could you supply details on how to attach the posts to the deck.  If the posts go through the deck to the ground below, can you supply concrete footing details?  Also, need details for the attachment of the main 22 x 12 beams to attach the posts.

Hi David,

Thanks for your question and welcome to the community.

The details of the install will actually be determined by least in regards to size and materials.

For starters, if the posts are going through the deck, do you have a drill to adequately cut a hole into the decking? Attaching the posts to the deck can be done with exterior grade brackets and sheet metal (self-tapping) screws.

Also, its up to you how you would want the footing to be. Depending on what you'd like to plant on the trellis can determine this.

Your safest bet is to come into your nearest Home Depot and speak to a pro desk or hardware associate who can guide you through options, since there is more than one approach to this. Or, if you can give us more information regarding your decking and trellis, we can attempt to assist you further here.

Hi David,

The most common and probably easiest solution would be Simpson Strong Tie connectors.

Click the link and then browse through their exceptional products for your perfect connectors.

Anchor your metal parts with carriage bolts, flat washers, lock washers, and nuts ... this combo will prevent the nuts from backing off.
