OUT DOOR KITCHEN BACKER BOARD?

I AM BUILDING AN OUT DOOR KITCHEN AND WAS WONDERING IF I COULD INSTALL BACKER BOARD DIRECT TO THE TREATED STUDS AND THEN APPLY CULTURED STONE DIRTECT TO THE BACKER BOARD. IF THIS IS POSSIBLE WHAT TYPE OF BOARD IS RECOMMENDED FOR OUT DOOR USE? THANKS

Thanks for your question and welcome to the community!

 

Using tile backerboard is an excellent choice for using it as a base for your cultured stone. All backerboards that the Home Depot carries can be used for your project. Since you are using heavy stone in an exterior setting make sure all of your seams and edges have the proper seam tape and thin-set mortar placed over them. Also, make sure you are using 1/2" thick backerboards and not the thinner 1/4". 

 

Lastly, be sure the screws you use to install them onto the treated studs are rated for backerboards. These speciality screws are usually located alongside the backerboards in our building materials department.
