My husband painted a previously semi gloss painted door with flat because the finish is cracked.

Is the paint otherwise tight? Is it peeling? If it appears to be tight, you will want fill the "cracking' with a pre-mixed vinyl based patching spackle. It may take a couple coats to completely fill the cracks. After a good sanding, prime and paint with the sheen of your choice. You can either use a dedicated primer , or simply go twice around with a self-priming paint such as Behr's Premium Plus or Premium Plus Ultra. Both of these interior paints are self-priming.

If the paint is actually peeling, you may be forced to strip it back to are bare wood ( or metal) to get a really good finish. This is usually done with chemical strippers.

Hope this has helped.
