Painting Ikea bookcases

I have 3 ikea bookcases that I would like to paint white. I have scoured the internet and have found the following suggestions:

1. Sand, prime with something like Zinsser, paint

2. Sand, use Krylon dual paint and primer or Rust-oleum enamel paint and primer in one sprays

My question is there a product that I can use to just paint over the bookcases? Do I always have to sand?

Hello MG63, and welcome to the Community!

I've painted raw wood as well as staining, and in either case, sanding has been part of my process. I did come Google searching and came across some links that might help you accomplish your project without sanding, and you have several to choose from and decide.

Here's the link:

Hello MG63 and welcome to the Community.

There are times when you can skip sanding furniture. However, before painting it, you might need to degloss it.  If the piece you are painting has any sort of finish on it that is shiny, slick, glossy, semi-glossy, even satin, then you need to degloss it before painting it.  Deglosser is like liquid sandpaper.  Here is a link to deglossers options depending on your location.

See a few fine example below, Klean-strip and Krud Kutter Deglossers.

Thank you for your inquiry.
