Painting a Swirl Textured Ceiling

What steps should I take to clean and paint a swirl textured ceiling which also has glitter attached to it?

Hello larrine!

It appears from your question that you have an existing swirl texture on your ceiling and glitter is incorporated into the existing finish ... so we'll cover this project from that perspective.

PRIME OR NOT?

If the existing ceiling has stains or water marks, you'll need to prime ... oil primer seals water stains while water-based primer will cover most simple smudge marks.

If the ceiling is simply dull but not dirty or stained, you could use Behr Ultra Ceiling Paint or Kilz Ceiling Paint and Primer ... both products are primer plus paint and will cover unstained ceilings in two coats.

WHAT ROLLER COVER TO USE?

When painting a textured surface, measure the depth of the pattern and add one-half inch to the length of the nap. For example, you would select a quality roller cover that has 3/4ths inch nap if your texture is 1/4th inch deep.

DO YOU WANT TO ADD GLITTER?

The process described above (priming and painting) will cover the existing glitter. However, it can easily be added back.

Use Behr Faux Glaze and Martha Stewart Specialty Glitter Paint.

Add two half-pint containers of Martha's Glitter Paint to one gallon of faux glaze.

Shake or stir the can regularly.

Tape the top of the walls and use the deeper nap roller cover discussed earlier to roll the ceiling right out to the tape ... do not cut-in with a brush because this will make a distinct visual border as wide as your cut-in brush.

As the glaze dries clear, you will be left with a fresh coating that randomly adds glitter.

NOTE:
You may choose to add less or more MS Glitter Paint to your mix to make the pattern less dense or more dense.
