Painting over bright, multicolored mural-- Tips on a good primer?

Here's a question that comes to us in the comments section of a short article on the Apron blog about Martha Stewart metalic project paint.

Mysti says:

I am preparing to paint over a bright mural of a jungle theme (many different colors). The color replacing it is “BEHR Premium Plus Ultra ‘Home Decorators Collection Sovereign Interior/Exterior’ Paint”. Any pointers on a good primer to make sure pre-existing colors won’t bleen through, or that I won’t have to recoat ‘umpteen’ different times?

Wow. A bright, multicolored mural might be a challenge to cover. I can see why she'd want to know what primer to use.

Any recommendations for Mysti?

In this case - using an oil based primer is the best solution.  Without knowing exactly what type of paints were used to paint the is better to be safe than sorry.

If interior:   Coverstain       coverstain.jpg

                                             Kilz               kilz.jpg

If Exterior:                                    Coverstain      coverstain.jpg

                                                                     Kilz                                Kilz Complete.jpg

Keep in mind that these products are specifiic for interior/exterior and clean up with paint thinner.
