Priming Bare wood

Hi Maulcy,

Many primers are suitable for wood.

However, I personally prefer Zinsser Cover Stain.

This oil-based primer embeds into the surface of wood and provides a strong base for any topcoat ... either water-based or oil-based paint.

Water-based primers are often labeled for wood, yet when you apply water products to wood the grain absorbs the water and swells ... creating a slight texture on the surface.

If you select water-based, expect to sand with 220-grit after the first coat to ensure the surface is perfectly smooth.
