Re: How to Refinish the Polywood bench?

I think this is a polywood garden bench. It has many layers of paint.  I would like to make it new. How do I refinish this?

Thank you for your question and your picture! Pictures help a lot.

The first thing I would do with this bench is sand it smooth. It would probably be best to use a power sander. Your goal with the sanding is just to make it smooth. Places, like the end of the arm, that are pretty beaten up may never get completely smooth. In that case you can say is rustic and the nicks add to the appeal. :smileywink:

Once you sand what you can smooth, prime it with an exterior primer. My instinct is to tell you to use oil based because what is on there is more than likely oil based. If it is in fact latex based paint, you can use a latex based primer. After you prime the surface, you can use any exterior paint on top of it. I typically recommend using a satin or semi-gloss finish on furniture.

If you have any more questions, please let us know!
