Hey Scottykimberly.

The vent is 15 inches because it is between 2 wall studs or floor joists that are 16 inches on center. Chances are that this is the case and you will not be able to go with a bigger vent.

Hello Scottykimberly.

Register vents with a 15" dimension are kind of unusual.  There are 15" baseboard vents which do not extend into the hole, and as such a longer 18" version would work fine.  You may need anchors to mount it though.

A cold air intake vent can easily be 15" or more in size.  The grills for these are flat, and also do not intrude into the vent hole.  As such you can install whatever size grill you like as long as it is bigger than the hole.

So matching the vent cover you want is primarily a matter of making sure that any protrusion into the duct work is the correct size.

Chris.
