Removing Carpet

Just bought a house, carpet smells like cat and dog urine, I want to remove it to check if the hardwoods are in good shape but don't even know where to start. :-/

What a great way to start out the new year:smileyvery-happy: Congratulations!

To remove the carpet: start in a corner and pull up the carpet. The carpet is usually tucked under the baseboard (bottom trim board) and you will have to pry it out with a tool like a screw driver.  Get a pair of work gloves before doing anything else - there are "tack strips" running all along the wall and they will cut your skin if it comes in contact with you.

Once the carpet is out from under the trim…grab hold of the corner and start moving backwards towards the middle of the room.  You may want to get a carpet knife and cut the pulled up carpet into smaller more manageable sections.

If you see heavy dark stains on the subfloor you will either have to prime those areas before applying new carpet...or sand and strip them down to bare wood before finishing them (if hardwoods).

Please let me know what you find.
