Hello MadelinCahil!

If your crib is unfinished wood, use any primer then paint or use the primer-and-paint-in-one products like Behr Ultra or Glidden Duo.

If the crib was factory finished (painted or stained), use oil-based primer and then paint.

BEFORE YOU PRIME OR PAINT:

Clean the surface with Krud Kutter and a terry towel before either process and air-dry completely.

Do not use solvent-based cleaners ... they leave a residue that prevents paint adhesion.

Does the crib need to be sanded before using the primer?

Shebee,

Whereas, many of the new generation of self-priming paints have excellent adhesion, it is never a bad idea to give a slick surface a "scuff sanding" with 220 grit paper, to assure good adhesion. Alternately, a "de-glosser" liquid will also dull down the surface.
