Repainting vinyl shutters

Our red vinyl shutters (About 20 years old) are staining down the house after the house is power washed.  We wash the stain with acetone, but now want to paint the shutters.  Do I need to strip them completely?

Hello suzie1487!

You've taken excellent steps to prep the surface.

Usually, acetone will evaporate completely off the surface at room temperature.

Since we're in the colder months, I'd recommend a warm-water wash with mild detergent followed by a warm-water rinse.

This will ensure the chemicals are gone and the surface is ready to prime.

Zinsser 123 is a water-based primer designed to adhere to vinyl.

Your local Paint Associate can tint the primer to be similar to your new color.

Allow about two-hours for the primer to dry and then paint.

This primer, tinted to be similar to your siding color, will help seal the shutter color that stained your siding ... then repaint.
