Replace ballast

I’m trying to replace a Magnetek fluorescent ballast. It has black, white, & red wires. The one I’m trying to install in place is a GE with black, white, red, & blue wires. Both ballast are T12. Not sure what to do.
Thanks!

Hey Petiewheatstraw,

Thanks for your question and welcome to the community.

You may have gotten an ballast that requires an extra lamp (bulb) from what it sounds like. Your older ballast should have its wiring match up exactly with the new if you picked it for a 2 lamp fixture.

The old ballast should have the lamp types designation listed beside the wiring diagram. The most common type is a 4ft. F40T12. Be sure that the number of lamps matches the new ballast too. In other words, if the old one works for a 2 lamp F40T12, then you'd get the same.

If you have a 4 lamp version, then it wouldn't work in your situation. Let us know with more details or upload an image of both old and new, and then we can go from there.

Hope to hear from you again,

Joseph
