Replaced flapper. Turned off water and tank water is 1/2 gone

Water was running down the back side of my toilet bowl so I replaced the flapper with a Universal flapper.  The water was still trickling down the back side of the toilet after replacing the flapper.  No water is running over the overflow.  I turned the water off to the toilet and checked the water level in the tank.  12 hours later the next day the water in the tank was 1/2 empty.  Should I try a different flapper or is this a bigger issue?

Hello Dayna,

If you've replaced the flapper and are still experiencing water loss in the tank, the next place to look is the flush valve itself.

The shank washer (the washer directly under the flush valve inside of the tank) may be allowing water to escape down into the bowl, via a slow leak. Replacing this washer is not very difficult and is a very inexpensive fix.

It could also be possible that the flush valve tower itself may have a crack in it. Any pictures you provide could better help us diagnose the problem. I hope this helps.

Cheers,

Chris
