Replacing baseboard registers

We are remodeling an old house and would like to replace all of the baseboard heat registers.  How do you measure to replace them?

Hello SheenaHinn,

Thanks for your question and welcome to the community!

Measuring for your baseboard heat registers can be a simple task. To do it successully, you'll first need to take off the registers and measure the opening of the hole, not just the overall size of the register itself. If the registers are old and covered with paint from the walls, using a utility knife to cut the edges can greatly reduce the risk of painting coming off the walls.

This 3-way register shown below has a 10 in x 6 in. opening but the final measurement that it covers is actually 11.75 in. x 7.75 in. This is important when knowing what kind of register you have.

Take them off, measure the openings, and bring in the measurements and/or the registers in your local Home Depot. We can get you the right replacement to make the baseboards look great again.

Hope this helps you out,
