I just had a new cedar fence built.  At this time of year, how long does it take for the wood to dry to begin staining?

Wthout a moisture meter, it is kind of hard to give a definitive answer. However, in a warm, dry, sunny, windy climate, those boards could be ready in only a couple days. Also, most of today's exterior stains are water based. These will tolerate a higher moisture content than a true oil.

Wood that is really saturated will feel damp to the touch. I have actually run cedar fencing slates through my table saw and had water thrown onto my chest! But if it feels dry, looks dry and has had a couple days erected in good weather, I would not feel uncomfortable staining it with a water based stain.

Hope this has helped.

Thank you, this is really helpful.  Now it may be a juggling act as we're heading into a busy monsoon week!
