While it's possible to tile over tile, the old tile needs to be fully adhered to the wall otherwise new tile job will fail.  You also need to properly prep the existing tile which may including scarification.

Personally I would remove the old tile.  If any of your work includes the tub/shower area, it presents a great opportunity to inspect for any damage inside the wall.  Over the years, we've learned that some of the older methods and materials haven't held up as well as originally thought.

Layering tile will only lead to future issues rairai!

People do it with wallpaper and maybe even tile.

But tile removal is so simple that it is hardly worth the chance for future problems to take this approach.

This amazing tool will slide under the edge of tile and remove row after row quickly and efficiently ... without destroying your wall.

Once removed, you'll be able to prep and install your new tile without concern over future failure.
