Should there be a back draft damper right above a range hood?

I do not have a back draft damper right above my range hood and I think I'm losing heat and A/C efficiency.  Should there be a damper there, or does the roof cap serve this function?

Hi AzBruce,

A vent damper in the range hood exhaust would be beneficial.

However the amount of energy lost through the vent is minimal and in most parts of the country and adding one would provide only a small energy savings.

In addition, most people don't use the exhaust fan when cooking and the cooking odors and smoke would not be properly vented due to the damper.

You would have to use the exhaust fan every time you cooked anything on the range.
