Sidewalk Garden & Tree Up-Lighting

Hello everyone.

This is Greengiant. For me, fall is a time to have family come over to spend together. Whether it is family or friends that are coming over watching the football game or just a get together, my yard has to make an impression. It will soon be time to replace those spring/summer annuals with something that will survive the cold weather.

There are two quick projects that the novice in you will be able to appreciate, that can transform your yard into a welcoming oasis in just one day. Be sure to download the PDFs below to complete both of these projects.

Things you will need for these projects include:

Miracle Gro Garden Soil

hand trowel

pointed shovel

marking chalk or marking paint

garden Mums

mulch of your choice.

soaker hose

Malibu LED flood lights

Malibu Transformer (total wattage of lights, not to exceed the wattage of transformer)

low voltage wire

 Step 1.

Draw out where your flower beds are to be beside the walkways. You can use your water hose as a template to mark where you want your lines to be. Once you are satisfied with your lines, Get some marking chalk or some marking paint and mark where your island is to be.

 Step 2 .

If there is grass inside the marked area, you will need to get your shovel and dig out the grass. You might need to get the wheelbarrow for this. I would make sure that there are no phone, cable or utility lines in the area before digging.

Step 3.

Now that the grass is removed, we need to amend the soil. Miracle Gro Flower Vegetable soil is a great choice for a project like this. Dump the soil in the bed and mix into the ground thoroughly with the shovel.

Step 4

Design how you would like to lay your mums out and then plant accordingly. Now that we have our flower bed completely planted, we will need to add the finishing touches. Because Mums prefer to be watered from below, which will make the blooms last longer, you will need to run a soaker hose along your island. Once the soaker hose is in place, you will need to put down mulch to hold the moisture to the plants to keep them from drying out.

The days are getting shorter and the nights longer. Adding outdoor accent lighting to your trees will make a huge impact on the look of your yard for a relatively small price. You will be getting home from work in the dark soon so wouldn't it be nice to roll up to a beautifully lit yard.

The size of the tree that you would like to light up will dictate how many lights you will need for it. Smaller trees may only require 1 or 2 lights where larger trees may need 3 or 4 lights. Installing these will be a breeze and will take little time.

Step 1.

You will need to mount the transformer to the house near an outlet and then run the wire from the transformer, to the place that the lights are going.

Step 2.

Snap the pigtail wire on the light around the wire where the light is to go. Once the light is wired up, plug in the transformer to insure that the pigtail is tight enough that the light comes on. Unplug transformer and repeat with each light. Once you have all the lights working and stuck in place plug them back in.

Step 3.

You can cover the wire that is in the island with mulch, but if the wire is in the grass, I would recommend getting the edger, with a new blade and digging a trench with it to bury the wire as to not fall victim to the lawn mower. If no edger then just use a flat nose shovel and just cut a line across the grass, without removing any dirt and tuck the wire into trench.

These projects will transform the yard beautifully and can be done in less than 1 day. If there are any questions on this project or other projects, feel free to hit us up here on the community, where we are always happy to help.
