Stain

I'm restaining old ask paneling, from honey to Darl Cherry. I've sanded, applied water base stain sealer, when I apply the stain, know matter how light I apply it I get pockets that are soot black. I re sand,& seal the aseas but still get the black areas

The problem may lay with the construction of the paneling.

 

Some paneling is just a thin veneer of wood covering a sub standard piece of wood beneath. This wood usually runs in a different direction of the top wood grain (like a wafer cracker).  When it is exposed it takes the stain in an all together different manner than the top layer.

 If you have exposed this wood by sanding off the veneer in spots, then unfortunately there isn't much that can be done except to replace or paint.
